THE TAKEAWAY
A clear written scope makes it easier to compare proposals and discuss the details that matter for your home.
Start with the existing wall
Ask your contractor to explain what will be removed, what can be inspected only after removal, and how concealed damage will be documented. Make the process for approving additional work part of the proposal.
Compare complete scopes
Compare removal, wall preparation, water management, trim, flashing, finish and cleanup. A material name alone does not tell you what is included. Request the installation instructions for the exact product being proposed.
Plan for the details
Discuss the transitions around windows, doors, decks and roof edges. Ask who is responsible for permits, what inspections may apply, and how access and landscaping will be protected.
Your seven questions
What is being removed? How is hidden damage handled? What water-management details are included? Which exact products are specified? Who handles permits? What does the warranty cover? What is the payment and change-order process?
